St. Teresa, Show Me The Way Home: An online pilgrimage through The Interior Castle
8 sessions, Mondays, September 28 - November 16, 2026
12:00 noon - 1:00 pm CT
Led by David Miller
The Interior Castle is St. Teresa of Avila’s most developed expression of her spiritual vision, written near the end of her life. She unveils the precious and holy mystery of our soul, which Christ has chosen for his dwelling place at the center of our being. Teresa depicts the soul as a precious castle in which are seven dwelling places, each with many rooms aside and above and below. God’s light and love shines through the castle, finding and illumines where we are, the light growing brighter as we are drawn nearer to heart-to-heart oneness with our Beloved.
In this online retreat, we will walk through the seven dwellings, sometimes called mansions, St. Teresa describes in the soul. Each dwelling represents a graced-state of awareness of our oneness with God on our way to deeper union. With each mansion, we will make connections with our own spiritual journeys, paying close attention to what God is doing in each dwelling, what is happening in our souls and what it means for our prayer.
Each session will begin with a presentation of key themes and insights from one of the seven mansions, followed by group discussion in which participants can share their insights, experiences and questions. You will not need to read The Interior Castle to benefit from this pilgrimage through Teresa’s vision, but it will enrich your understanding and experience if you read sections of her work, which will be suggested prior to each week’s session.
Preferred text: You may use your own copy of The Interior Castle, if you have one. For most readers, The Interior Castle, translated by Mirabai Starr, is strongly recommended ($11.89; Amazon). It smooths out Teresa's difficult sentences and syntax for accessibility ($11.89; Amazon). For those wanting a more literal, scholarly translation, The Interior Castle: Study edition, translated by Kieran Kavanagh (19.99, Amazon).
