“Remain in Me”: Practices that Nurture the Soul
(Tending the Call is a resource to support, enrich, and encourage Spiritual Leaders and Directors.)
“Abide in Me,” Jesus told us. “Remain in Me; dwell in Me. Tarry. Stay. Endure.” The language Jesus chose reveals much about the heart of God, but it wasn’t actually a new language or a novel concept – the Old Testament also is laced through with God’s longings for us: return, cling, linger. The rhythms of the spiritual life – the traditional ones as well as practices that don’t look particularly “spiritual” at all – strengthen and deepen our relationship with this passionate and intimate God who declares to us: “I have loved you with an everlasting love!” How we respond depends on how God wired us, as well as the sometimes skewed perceptions we have of God’s character. We’ll take time to listen, time to deepen, and time to share with each other.
